Replace your Objective Statement

Here’s the deal... Objective Statements went out of fashion a while ago now but people are still using them. And if you’re scratching your head wondering if resumes have fashion or style, they TOTALLY do. If it’s been a while since you’ve applied for a job, you want to be sure to have an updated looking resume and one of the biggest trends over the last few years has been the phasing-out of objective statements.

One key reason is objective statements are not an efficient use of space and they come across as redundant information. If you’re trying to condense a storied career down to two pages, make every line count. The hiring manager knows you’re “Seeking a career as a project manager” because you already applied for the project manager position. Stating the obvious can make a resume appear entry level when they may actually be a career professional.

The traditional “Seeking a career as…” or “Project Management” objective statement also doesn’t play up your strengths or tell the potential employer specifically what you bring to the table. You want to be able to showcase your skills and personal brand in the best light possible.

How do we do that?

The answer is to write a dynamic Professional Summary to replace your objective statement. This section will highlight your skills and lead the HR professional into reading your resume. Make them want to read about your experience and accomplishments! One of the best ways to execute a Professional Summary is to lead off with a robust adjective to describe a specialized skill (tailored to the job announcement) and follow it up with the key details. Do this for a few lines and you’ll have a short Summary that is all about how YOU are the person for the job.

Example: Expert (adjective) communicator (skill-based qualification) who is able to establish team dynamics within a diverse multi-level organization (key details).

Examples from Real Client Resumes:

“Detail-oriented administrative professional and military veteran aiming to leverage Logistics experience and over 5 years proven knowledge of customer service, records management, and office support. Highly adept at written and oral communication within a diverse and complex organization. Adaptable team member recognized for efficient and creative problem solving.”

“Dynamic communications ambassador with demonstrated track-record in innovating creative solutions and pioneering outreach techniques critical to driving organizational success. Team-oriented manager with excellent initiative and strong decision-making ability. Recognized for high-level ability to collaborate with stakeholders, build client trust, and foster lasting brand loyalty.”

The above statements are powerful and give you an idea of their skills, purpose, and what they offer an organization. Need help on your summary? Allow me to give you some quick pointers and show you key areas to tailor to your next job.
